USC 2007 Summer Seminars南加大暑期課程(高中生)

Curriculum

This summer, many seminars will be offered to a maximum of 475 students. Though separate from the university’s other summer courses, the Seminars are taught by some of USC’s best educators in the same classrooms, laboratories, and academic support facilities used by USC undergraduates. The Seminars teach art in the context of performance and science in the context of contemporary problem solving. In both depth and scope, each seminar is designed to be more interactive, engaging, and challenging than either accelerated high school classes or the broad introductory courses offered by other summer pre-collegiate programs.

Each of the Summer Seminars meets Monday through Friday in lecture, discussion, laboratory, or field trip mode. During the course of each Seminar, students are expected to complete a series of graded homework assignments and in-class projects. Attendance at all classes, workshops, and laboratory sessions is mandatory. Time each evening is provided for assignment preparation, research, individual study, or group work.

Upon successful completion of a seminar, students will earn three (3) units of USC elective credit. This credit can be counted as elective credit towards the USC bachelor’s degree or transferred to most other four-year colleges.

College Application Process Workshop

Each Summer Seminars student may register to participate in the College Application Process workshop. The workshop is designed to prepare the student for the process of applying to college. The workshop deals with the main steps in completing the process: preparing a resume, securing letters of recommendation, writing the college application essay, and participating in the interview process. The workshop meets three times during the course of the summer. This practical mini-workshop has proven very helpful to the students who have participated in it during the past summers. To register for this workshop, check the box on the application form. There is no additional cost for this workshop.

Summer Social Life

An active social life is also a part of the Summer Seminars. Friday nights are spent on campus. Friday evening activities may include a Karaoke Party, a dance, a birthday party for all of the students who celebrate their birthdays during the Seminars, and movie nights. Saturdays are set aside for visiting some of the tourist attractions that make the greater Los Angeles area one of the nation’s most frequently visited tourist destinations. In past summers, the Seminar students have visited Hollywood, the Getty Museum, Hollywood Bowl, Disneyland, Magic Mountain Amusement Park, a Dodgers baseball game, and have spent a day at the beach.

Residential Experience

For most undergraduates, residential life is a key component of the university experience. University residence, therefore, is an essential component of the USC Summer Seminars experience. As a Summer Seminars student you will get to work, eat, play, and sleep on campus for the full duration of the program.

As a student in the Summer Seminars program you will have access to the university’s Lyon Center (fitness center par excellence) and outdoor Olympic swimming facilities for free time recreation.
