In 2004, an American filmmaker, Morgan Spurlock, tried an interesting but shocking experiment. For 30 days, Spurlock ate three meals a day at McDonald’s only. He wanted to know how fast food would affect his health. After a month of eating burgers, French fries and milkshakes, he put on 12 kilograms, and he started to get sick. He had to stop eating at McDonald’s. Spurlock made his eating experience into a movie, Super Size Me. It’s a film that Asians, not only Americans, should see because more and more Asians are eating fast food and getting fat fast.
All the big names in the fast-food industry- McDonald’s, KFC, Wendy’s, Burger King-are from the United States. Yet, now, more Asians eat at those restaurants than Americans. According to a recent study. 35 percent of Americans eat at a fast-food restaurant at least once a week. The percentage is higher for Asians: 61 percent for Hong Kongers, 54 percent for Filipinos, and 41 percent for Chinese. Luckily, for Taiwanese, the percentage is only 19 percent. However, according to another study, at least 30 percent of Taiwanese children eat fast fst food once a week!
There are many reasons why fast food is making Asians fat, first, Asians often have few chances to eat at home because of their busy work and school life, and fast food can easily replace homemade meals. Second, food in places like McDonald’s has too much salt and fat. This busy lifestyle and fast-food diet cannot be good for Asians. In Taiwan, 20 percent of children are overweight.
Is there any way to stop this fatty trend? Some fast-food eaters have sued McDonald’s for making them fat. They say that the restaurant did not tell them the health risks of its food. Taking fast-food companies to court may force them to introduce healthier food on their fast-food restaurants now offer salads and fresh fruit. So, maybe we should slow down on the fast food and get fat the slow way!?
